A Gift Card (also called a stored value card) is “loaded” with a specific dollar amount and is used as a payment option for future purchases. Since cards are generally given to others as a gift, gift cards increase the businesses customer base. Businesses may decide to set pre-determined dollar amounts or allow consumers to select the amount of their choice when purchasing. The plastic card can display a customized design with a business’ logo or be a standard pre-designed card.
The dollar amount is loaded using a terminal, POS software system or Internet virtual terminal. The card is swiped through POS or terminal and value added or subtracted from the card balance. Receipts print and are handed back to the customer with card. All money is collected at the store at the time of sale. The program simply keeps track of balances on the card and can be set-up to reward your customers for repeat business. What is a Loyalty Card?
Like Gift Cards, Loyalty Cards are plastic cards with a magnetic strip that can track customer visits and dollars spent in the store. These types of programs help promote brand awareness and loyal business. After the consumer hits the levels the rewards are automatically put on the card on the next business day. The growth of gift cards in the U.S. has grown significantly from their introduction in the mid 1990s. Here’s what various organizations tell us about the use of gift cards.
Gift card sales totaled $97 BILLION in 2007, up from $83 BILLION in 2006, according to the Tower Group cited in The New YORK Times. Money retailers get when gift cards are not used or leftover funds remain is estimated at $7.8 BILLION in 2007.
Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst with NPD Group, estimates that more than 60 percent of holiday shoppers bought gift cards.

• 93 percent said they are likely to purchase additional gift cards in the next year;
